Overview

The Summer Medical and Dental Education Program at UNMC is designed to identify, recruit, and assist future dentists and doctors through a comprehensive 6 week summer experience for talented freshman and sophomores. The overall goal of the program is to provide each scholar the naviagation tools necessary to reach their current and future goals.

UNMC's primary focus on core academics is a springboard for students in their pursuit of a career as a physician or dentist. What makes this program unique is its emphasis on small group learning. Instruction includes areas such as: health disparities, medical ethics and public health. Various clinical shadowing experiences will help students build a strong foundation in their chosen discipline as well as potentially spark new passions in the medical and dentistry field. Scholars not only gain insight but also get the opportunity to practice important principles which are essential to applying to medical and dental school.

Finances

  • Meals: Monday-Friday - breakfast, lunch and dinner; brunch and dinner on Saturdays and Sundays

  • Travel Assistance: Up to $250 for students traveling more than 50 miles from Omaha, mailed at the end of the program, after completing a travel reimbursement form

  • Stipend: Disbursed in 3 installments (at the end of weeks 1, 3, and upon completion of the program)

Living

  • Housing: Scott Residence Hall on UNO South Campus - Suite style dorms

  • Health Insurance: ALL students are required to have proof of insurance which can be purchased through UNMC. Limited health services are provided through UNMC Student Health free of charge

  • Social Activities: College World Series, Henry Doorly Zoo, Taste of Omaha "family" activities, talent show and other cultural enrichment....Also, visit Old Market for good food and shopping.
