Overview
The mission of the Howard University SMDEP is to provide an educational experience of exceptional
quality that will strengthen the overall academic preparation of
underrepresented minority, disadvantaged, and low-income students who
express interest in admission to medical or dental school.
SMDEP strives to enhance the university's ability to contribute
well-qualified, socially conscious medical and dental school candidates
committed to improving the health and quality of life for all communities
throughout this nation and the world, especially those communities
underserved by the health professions.
Finances
- Meals: Meal tickets for 3 meals a day, 7 days a week at the
Howard University Hospital cafeteria.
- Travel Assistance: Limited funding available; based on need
and targeted to those who live more than 50 miles away. Students will
be reimbursed up $250.
- Stipend: Disbursed in 2 installments; no later than week 2
and during week 6.
Living
- Housing: Air-conditioned doubles in Howard University dormitory.
- Health Insurance: None provided; students are required
to have proof of health insurance; limited services provided at
the Howard University Student Health Center, free of charge.
- Social Activities: Various social and cultural activities in
the Washington, D.C., area, for example, the National Dental Museum, the National Museum
of Health and Science, the local Caribbean festival, and Annual Folklife
Festival.
