SMDEP: The Basics

The Basics matrix provides information on program start dates, whether it is a combined program (medical and dental), a description of clinical experiences, and if the program provides academic credit. Clinical experiences represent 5% of the program time at all sites.

Pre-medicine: Clinical experiences will include opportunities in areas such as: general internal medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, emergency medicine, pediatrics, and UNMC student-run community health clinics. Pre-medicine scholars will also have a weekly anatomy class plus small-group activities in the Clinical Skills Center including taking vital signs, documentation requirements and patient/providers communication skills.

Pre-dentistry: Scholars will participate in a variety of "hands-on" pre-clinical dental experiences, such as taking impressions and making dental models, participating in an anatomy laboratory demonstration, and working in a dental radiology project. Scholars will also shadow in a dental clinic, spend time in the emergency room, and shadow in a dental operating room.
