SMDEP Pre-Health Advisor Page
Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP)
is a FREE (full tuition, housing, and meals) six-week
summer academic enrichment program that offers freshman and sophomore
college students intensive and personalized medical and dental school
preparation.
Eligibility
- Be currently enrolled as a freshman or sophomore in college
- Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5
- Be a U.S. citizen or hold a permanent resident visa
- Not have previously participated in SMDEP
Program Offerings
- Academic Enrichment in the Basic Sciences and Math
- Career Development Activities
- Learning Skills Workshops or Sessions
- Exposure to Clinical Settings
- Workshops in Financial Planning and Health Policy
Application Process
Application Opens: November 1, 2011 at 12:01 a.m. EST
Application Closes: March 1, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. EST
All applicants are encouraged to apply early!
The SMDEP National Program Office (NPO) has established admissions
guidelines regarding acceptance procedures for applicants.
Please remind your students to submit all of the following materials
by the deadline.

- Students interested in living off campus and attending one of
the participating sites must complete the 2012
Commuter Application Form in addition to the SMDEP
Web Application. The following sites are offering a non-residential/commuter
component:
Case Western Reserve
University
Columbia University
Duke University
University of Texas-Houston
UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical and
New Jersey Dental
University of Washington
- Transcripts
Please Note: College freshman who have not received their
first semester grades are advised to wait until their grades are
reported before sending a transcript to the National Program Office.
- Letters
of Recommendation
Late submission of transcripts and recommendations could result
in their application not being processed. Please remind them that
all documents need to be submitted to the NPO on or before the
application deadline of March 1! The NPO strongly encourages
early application submission to increase their chance of being
considered by the program site(s) because applications are reviewed
on a first-come, first-served basis.
Note: To give the program sites adequate time to view all applications
and make decisions, the NPO is requesting that all letters of recommendation
and transcripts be postmarked by Thursday, March 1, 2012.
The Admission Decision Release Dates are February 15 and April
1, 2012.
