About SMDEP Ambassadors
The National Program Office would like your help recruiting other inspiring
pre-medical and pre-dental students into the Summer Medical and Dental
Education Program (SMDEP). As SMDEP participants, you
are the best ambassadors for the program.
What is a SMDEP Ambassador?
A SMDEP Ambassador is a former participant who volunteers to recruit eligible
SMDEP applicants to the program. The applicants must submit a completed application
packet (online application, transcripts, and recommendations) by the application
deadline.
To be eligible, you must have also attended and completed SMDEP, the Minority Medical Education Program (MMEP), or the Summer Medical Education Program (SMEP).
How do I become a SMDEP Ambassador?
Fill out the SMDEP Ambassador Application
(Word, 1 page). Please send this information along with your resume to
smdepambassadors@aamc.org.
What does an Ambassador Do?
There are many ways in which Ambassadors help the NPO including:
-
Attend national meetings and conferences with the NPO and Program Sites.
-
At appropriate opportunities share information about SMDEP and the importance
of completing an enrichment program as part of preparing for medical or
dental school.
-
Encourage students to visit the SMDEP Web site to read about the program,
review the program sites, and begin the application process.
-
Serve as a mentor throughout the application process by advising applicants
to request transcripts and recommendations early and to submit their completed
online application by the SMDEP deadline of March 1st.
As you recruit students for SMDEP, tell each of them to enter your ambassador
identifier on the portion of the online application that asks, "Who Referred
You?" This is how the National Program Office will know how many applicants
with completed application packets you were responsible for recruiting.
